Is tonight a good night
to look up?

Your free stargazing forecast β€” see what's happening in the sky tonight at any location.

Hi β€” I'm Tim. I built this site because every astronomy planning tool I tried was either paywalled, cluttered, or missing what I actually needed under the eyepiece. So I built the one I wanted. Enter your location and you get a complete sky briefing in seconds β€” cloud cover, moon, aurora, ISS, planets, and tonight's best targets for your latitude. Free. Forever.

Is it clear tonight? Is the sky good for stargazing where you are? Will the Moon, planets, a meteor shower or the ISS be visible β€” and when's the best observing window? What's Up Tonight answers all of it for any location in one glance: cloud cover, transparency, moon phase and a clear-sky score from 0 to 100, updated for tonight and the nights ahead.

1. Enter your city or town in the search box below β€” or pick one of the dark-sky locations.
2. Read the Astro Score (0–100). Above 70 = go out tonight. Around 50 = OK with patience. Below 30 = stay in.
3. Scroll for the hourly cloud forecast, moon phase, ISS passes, planets, meteor showers and aurora. Click Targets for the full deep-sky catalog with altitude graphs.
4. Saved a location? It stays put. Visit anytime, no signup needed.

How the score is calculated:
Cloud cover 38% Β· Moon phase 24% Β· Precipitation 14% Β· Wind 13% Β· Humidity 11% Β· Averaged over the 5-hour observing window (9 PM – 2 AM tonight, 8 PM – 1 AM on later dates)
Cloud weighting is altitude-aware: high cirrus penalized more than low cumulus (it destroys astronomy more).
Dew is not scored β€” it doesn't dim a clear sky, it just fogs optics. See the Dew Risk card to plan for it (a heater band solves it).
Plan with this. Cross-check before high-stakes nights.

Moon Tonight
β€”
β€”
Why is a "quarter" moon half-lit?
Phases are named by the Moon's position in its ~29.5-day cycle, not by how much of it is lit. First Quarter is one quarter of the way from one new moon to the next β€” and at that point exactly half the disc is lit. Less than half lit = crescent; more than half = gibbous; the two "quarter" phases are the half-lit points in between.

πŸ’‘ The illuminated % isn't a fixed daily value either β€” it drifts a percent or two through the day as the Moon orbits, so it's a moving target by nature. We show it for 9 PM, your evening observing window.

β‰ˆ sea-level horizon Β· true-north bearings β€” why?
Local terrain β€” hills, trees, buildings β€” can shift the actual moonrise/set by a few minutes. Bearings are geographic true north: set your phone compass to True North so its reading matches (iPhone: Settings β€Ί Compass β€Ί Use True North Β· Android: enable true north in your compass app).
